Welcome to Ulladulla Public School. We hope
that your child's time at this school will be both
happy and rewarding. Contact between home
and school is most important so we hope,
therefore, that we will have the opportunity
of seeing you often at the school.
During the year there will be times set
aside to discuss some of the things your
child will be undertaking in the course of the year.
There will also be social events.
Rationale:
Ulladulla Public School is concerned with quality education, focused on
excellence within a vital and dynamic environment.
The purpose of primary education at Ulladulla Public School is to develop happy, interested and motivated life long learners who are exposed to many and varied opportunities to develop skills and understandings for life.
We believe that:
• every child will learn;
• every child is important;
• every child should feel valued; and
• every effort will be acknowledged
We value:
• individual differences in teaching and learning;
• parent partnerships: and
• team work
We will use
these principles to:
• make educational decisions;
• decide on priorities; and
• evaluate our success
It is important that your child attend school each day to maintain a continued experience. Should your child be absent from school you should send a note detailing the period of absence and giving an explanation to the class teacher. Should your child be absent for a prolonged period please contact the teacher personally and they will organise a program of work for the period of the absence.
Parents are welcome to attend our weekly assemblies at which children receive awards. Assemblies are held each Friday from 11:30pm until 12:15pm. A roster of class items is published in the Newsletter at the commencement of each term.
KINDERGARTEN - During the course of the school term a banking officer will visit the school to tell children about banking. Please do not send any money to the school for banking until the banking officer has visited the school and sent home banking envelopes. School banking is carried out every Friday during school terms.
When considering the pros and cons of bicycles at Ulladulla, the staff have had to take into account the developmental capabilities of the children and the conditions of the surrounding roads. The major roads around Ulladulla School is Green St. This Street is unsuitable for inexperienced riders. The heavy traffic flow creates a very dangerous scenario for our children. Coupled with this is the fact that children of Infants school age do not have the physical capabilities to cope with traffic. They are limited in their peripheral vision, their judgment of speed and distance and their co-ordination.
For these reasons we suggest that for their own safety:
1) All children at Ulladulla School who ride a bike have a correctly fitting, Standards Association approved helmet.
2) No children under the age of ten are permitted to ride unsupervised.
3) Parents instruct children in rules of road safety.
4) All children's bikes should be fully maintained as a matter of routine.
Hopefully these guidelines will help to dispel the misconception that the bicycle is a toy; it is in fact a vehicle and should be treated accordingly.
To assist parents in obtaining books suitable for their children at an economical price, our Librarian runs the Ashton Scholastic Book Club. Flyers containing the advertised books are sent home and parents are asked to return the order form with the CORRECT money if they wish to place an order.
Eleven buses serve the school. They go to Milton, Mollymook, Burril Lake, Tabourie, Kings Point, Termeil/Bawley Point, Slaughterhouse Rd, Kiola and North St.. They leave the school at 3.35 pm. The “bush” bus leaves at 3.15 and goes out to the back of Milton. Any change to a child's going home routine must be sent in writing to the class teacher or phoned through in an emergency. In the afternoons 4 teachers supervises the children who are waiting for the buses.
Many children from our school use the bus. All children in Kinder, Year 1 and Year 2 are allowed a free bus pass, as are Primary children who live more than 1.6km from the school. Passes must be carried for all journeys. Bus companies charge to replace lost passes. The bus company can withdraw a child's pass if they feel that a child's behaviour is detrimental to the safety of other passengers.
The Canteen can only operate every day if there are sufficient helpers. If you would like to volunteer to assist in the canteen, please contact the canteen supervisor or leave your name with the school secretary. New helpers are always welcome.
Mandatory NSW K-6 curriculum and syllabus documents form the basis of learning, school and class programs at Ulladulla. The curriculum is divided into six key learning areas (KLA): English, Mathematics, Science & Technology, Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE), Creative and Performing Arts and Personal Development, Health and Physical Education. Each KLA is further divided into learning areas.
Excursions which are considered an important part of education are planned for the children. We try to ensure that functions are spread out so that they do not impose a financial burden on anyone. However, this is not always possible as some groups or institutions are available only at certain times. A note is sent home and parents are asked to return the permission note along with the correct money to the class teacher - unless otherwise stated. Should anyone find that a specific excursion does cause a severe financial burden, please contact the school principal.
Our school hall is available for hire. Please contact the principal for details.
1. BOOSTER SHOTS - It is recommended that your children have their booster needles before starting school.
2. MEDICATION - Because of the obvious dangers of children bringing medication to school the following should be noted -
a) Try to regulate the dosage so that medication can be administered at home.
b) If Medication must be given during school hours it must be sent to the School Assistant's office first thing in the morning. No medication may be left in a child's bag. The bottle must be clearly labelled with the child's name and how and when the medication should be administered. In addition this information should be completed on the indemnity form (available from the office) that care givers are required to sign.
3. INFECTIOUS DISEASES: Below are a list of common ailments which your child may contact during their school career.
* CHICKEN POX - exclude for 7 days after first spots appear.
* CONJUNCTIVITIS - exclude until discharge from the eyes has ceased.
* GERMAN MEASLES - exclude for 7 days after the appearance of rash.

PLEASE NOTE, THAT PARENTS MAY
REQUEST INTERVIEWS
AT ANY TIME DURING THE YEAR.
If you wish to have an interview with a teacher, please ring or call at the office to make an appointment so that a time convenient to both yourself and the teacher can be set aside. The main interview period is at the end of second term after the Port Folios go home. Parents have the option of having 3 way interviews with their child present where they have to explain their port folio.
Any item that is valuable or fragile should not be brought to school as the school bears no responsibility for items lost or damaged.
Children are asked not to bring large sums of money to school. Bringing toy weapons to school is discouraged. Possession of knives or other weapons results in suspension.

If your child is late to school, they must also report at the office first and collect a late note which must be handed to their teacher,
All children will require a library bag. This should be of cloth, big enough to take a large book and tied with a drawstring.
All articles of clothing should be clearly labelled. There is a lost property basket in the office area. If your child loses an article of clothing please check the wet weather areas and the lost property bin.
Lunch time is between 1:00 and 1.55 pm. The first 15 minutes are spent eating outside. Please remember not to overload your child with food. Your child will require something light to eat, a piece of fruit or perhaps some biscuits and a drink.
Lunches may be ordered from the canteen. These orders should be placed between 9.00 and 9.20. The following should be clearly written on the bag:-
- CLASS
- NAME
- ITEMS REQUIRED
The money must be enclosed with the order. Canteen price lists are sent home and you are advised when prices change.
When children need to bring money to school for excursions or other functions, please ensure that it is securely placed in an envelope that displays: the child's name & class; amount and purpose.
The newsletter is compiled once a week and sent home with the youngest child in the family.
The P & C holds its meetings at 7.30pm on the third Tuesday in each month during the school year. All members of the community are invited to attend. A notice of meetings is generally published in the school newsletter a week prior to the meeting. The Annual General Meeting is held in November.
The major fundraiser for the Ulladulla P&C is the Market Day held annually on the last day of term 1.
Unfortunately, parking around the school is restricted. Please do not park in the bus bay, or double park behind cars in the car park. There is limited parking on Green St. Please note the 'No Standing' requirements and the 40kph speed zone around the school.
The playground is supervised from 8:55 each morning. We suggest that children arrive at school as near to this time as possible, so that while in the play area they are under the supervision of the assigned teacher. There is no other supervision provided after the final bell in the afternoon.
Any accident to pupils in the playground must be reported to the teacher on playground duty first. Students requiring further attention will be directed to the first aid assistant.
Each child receives 2 written summaries of their progress at the end of each semester. Interviews are available at anytime by making an appointment with the class teacher. All classes have parent interviews during Term 1 and are also available after the reports are issued in Terms 2 and 4.
Any child transferring to another state school within N.S.W. must obtain a transfer certificate from the office. Parents should obtain this certificate prior to enrolling their child at the new school. Library books and other school equipment must be returned prior to application for a transfer certificate.
Road safety is dealt with in class programs, but parents have the major responsibility of ensuring children adopt safe practices.
Children should be able to:
* cross any road safely and in the correct place.
* get on and off buses correctly.
* select safe places to play and avoid contact with strangers.
* ride bicycles safely and considerately.
* walk safely along roads that have no footpath.
* find help if they get lost or into trouble.
* protect themselves from extremes of weather .
The school has a contribution scheme, that assists in buying needed equipment. The fees are $35 per student or $70 per family. These may be paid in part or in full at any time. This is done through a Library Fund donation which is tax deductable.
The Council meets on the 4th Monday of each month or as advised in the school newsletter. As special needs arise, community members with specific expertise are invited to join the Council for a short period of time to assist with relevant decisions.
School Councils provide a focus for school community activity. The School Council has an important role in making sure that the whole community is involved with all the important decisions made by the school.
School Evacuation Drills are held to familiarise children with procedures if an emergency arose. Ulladulla has two planned evacuation routes. These are indicated by:
a) 5 rings of the school bell (repeated). Classes move by a prearranged route to the Bus bay.
b) Continuous (long) ringing of the bell. Indicates that children (and adults) move to the OVAL playground.
Bush Fires: In the event of a Bush Fire emergency we would be in the hands of Police and local Emergency Services. Because of the likely breakdown of communication and transport systems at such times, children would be kept at school or evacuated to a control point. Children would be kept under teacher supervision until the danger had passed or until children were collected by parents or by someone authorised in writing by parents.
School begins at 9.20 am.
School finishes at 3.30 pm.
The playground is not supervised before 8.55 am or after 3.30 pm.
Therefore no child should be at school prior to or after these times.
Scripture is held once a week on Thursday morning. Infants and primary have twenty-five minute lessons from 9:30am to 11:10pm. Roman Catholic and Combined Protestant teachers visit our school at this time. Children not attending scripture do so at the discretion of parents and therefore should bring a note stating this decision.
On enrolling at Ulladulla School you will be asked for an emergency contact so that in the event of your child becoming ill or having an accident during the course of the school day, we are able to contact one of the parents. Should any of this information change please contact the office immediately to allow the information to be up-dated.
In line with Government regulations NO smoking is permitted within the school grounds.
At Ulladulla Public School our sporting programs are designed to provide the physical education requirements of the children from K to 6 within the limited space available at Ulladulla School.
On enrolment all the children are placed into one of four Sports Houses.
| Sea Gulls (red) | Sea Hawks (blue) |
| Currawongs (yellow) | Kookaburras (green) |
(Brothers and sisters are placed in the same houses.)
