Kindergarten is the first, and a most important year of school for children. It is a time of personal adjustment, a stepping out beyond the family to the wider world. It is a year which is a transition from home to school, when a child's learning becomes more structured and formalised.

Through a variety of learning experiences, the child is provided with opportunities to develop concepts about themselves as learners and attitudes to school which should form the basis for all future schooling.

Here are a few ideas to make your child's transition in Kindergarten as easy as possible :

Starting Date and Time :

These will be advised when parents receive the Kindergarten Information Pack. Times are staggered so students can settle in at their own pace.

What To Bring :

Lunch in a plastic lunch box, playlunch in a paper bag, both clearly marked with your child's name, a juice or plastic bottle of drink. The break for play lunch is only 20 minutes so please provide only a piece of fruit, a few biscuits or a cheese stick or a small piece of cake, etc.

School Bag :

Bags should be easily identified from the outside by a keyring, ribbon, etc, as well as your child's name written clearly. Ensure your child can easily identify his/her bag.

School Shoes :

Label the inside of their shoes clearly with their name. Try and purchase the school shoes a couple of weeks in advance to get your child used to them.

Raincoats :

It is preferable that children starting in kindergarten wear a raincoat with a hood attached - clearly marked with their name of course. Umbrellas are discouraged until they are slightly older.

Canteen :

With so many routines to learn, it is highly recommended that kindergarten children don't bring money to spend at the Canteen for the first few weeks.

In the first few months of school your child has many adjustments to make - new friends, routines, absence of mum, etc. All children take varying degrees of time to settle in, so please be patient but seek teacher assistance if the problem persists.
